After dillydallying for over a month, the Sanchi Milk Federation declared a hike in milk prices across the State from Rs 2 per litre. The new prices started from Monday. Hike milk prices by Rs 2 per litre on all varieties ranging from Rs 14 per half litre of toned milk to full cream milk that costs Rs 28. Each of these varieties will now cost Rs 2 more per litre. Till recently, it was more profitable selling liquid milk than processed products. But this year, dairies are getting more money from milk products as compared to liquid milk. Consumers have to pay higher for liquid milk though there is no milk shortage.
However, could the Government have protected the consumers - especially the poor - from the hike?
Meanwhile, city residents expressed their displeasure over the constantly rising milk prices.
Manoj Sharma a School teacher- larger holdings of milch cows, is simply out of the question for small milk producers. For these reasons, he is a strong votary of the price hike announced. Is it not curious that the White Revolution, which has resulted in a sharp increase in milk supply in urban areas, has skipped rural folk," asks Manoj. This, he says, is because the commercialization of milk production has resulted in it becoming a commodity like any other to be sold in the consuming centres.
He is skeptical about any attempt to "protect" the urban consumer because he argues that this would only benefit the richer sections, not the poor (especially children).
The solution should be -One possible solution could be a Government scheme for schoolchildren, enabling households to draw milk supplies for the child using coupons distributed at schools. From a nutritional standpoint, especially for the girl child, this would make sense Sharma added.
Mrs. Sushma Agarwal housewife said- if milk price increased means prices of milk products like butter, chess, other milk product and milk powder are ruling high in market after some time. And no one believe but my family budget will increases by 2000 to 3000 rupees per month because it's a matter of children's health and I can't compromise with that just because of milk price hike. General public is just suffering from all side and government not doing any thing for it.

Of course, it isn't the rich, the politicians, or the heads of the departments it isn't any of the high society person who are suffering they don't even bother but what about the daily wages labour, poor man and middle class who have limited monthly budget, It is people who are struggling to make ends meet, to find food for their families, their children, their elderly parents. This is the fact that government ignoring and I think this price hike should be band because it's not affordable for any one.

Soon, it will become a luxury for the middle class and for the student who came here for studies because many time when we did not get time for food we drink milk but now I cant afford milk."
Another outsider student Ranjan, added, "Milk is perhaps, the best source of essential vitamins. But its spiraling cost is soon making it out of reach for the common man and why government not understanding that they are playing with the children's health now days when ever we go for shopping I am highly surprising all the time because of prices hike with most of the daily uses food and commodity."
Even as the farmers have expressed happiness with the hike in milk prices but the consumers are unhappy lot. Thousands of farmers, who have chosen dairy farming as their main profession is benefited by the price hike, have welcomed the price hike. However, in the district it has become a burden for the poor and the middle class. The daily wage earners and housewives are simmering with anger.
