Automobiles: Engineers across disciplines in demand

Automobile engineers in demand The automobile sector has seen tremendous growth in the recent years and will continue to grow further THIS is a sector with tremendous spin-off effects for both employment and the economy. And a unique feature of the sector is that it is a cluster-based industry.

Where are the jobs?
The maximum number of jobs is at the shop floor. Nearly 65 percent of the total work force remains here and with the advent of MNCs into the sector average pay package has grown. “Two verticals which are on the rise in the last two three years is design and development and industrial engineering,” says Amudha Parikhar, a consultant to the industry. With all the firms focusing on launching India-specific vehicles, development of new vehicles is on the rise, resulting in huge demand for labour.

What are the skills?
The sector demands high level of understanding of computer-controlled machinery and robotics since most of the auto assembly lines are completely automated. With concepts like Just in Time coming in, very high levels of awareness of quality concepts are also essential. The most preferred qualification is a B.Tech in Automobiles.
Ashutosh Padhy, 24 B.Tech in Automobile Engineering, Bharath University, Chennai
A keen interest in automobile technology and concern for alternative fuel drove me to automobile engineering degree. I have always pondered what lies ahead for mankind if we end up exhausting our limited oil resource. The desire to attain knowledge in this field was so compelling that I ped out of Mechanical engineering just after a year, which I was pursuing from an Orissa college.
There were no colleges in Orissa offering Automobile Engineering course so I moved to Chennai. The ride has been exciting so far. Last semester I did a project on ‘Emission control in Diesel Engine’ and in my 8th and final semester I am working on project called ‘Solar Hybrid Car’.

Right from the second semester onwards we have done industrial visits which have been great learning experiences. The college had 100 per cent campus placement last year but a year before that, due to recession, some students couldn’t be placed. Right now, the placements are going on and will continue till April-May. So far, out of our batch of 2,000 students, almost 1,700 have been taken by companies.
Companies like Mahindra, Renault Nissan, TVS group visit the campus. However, passenger cars in luxury segment take candidates with at least one year of experience as against freshers.Students are mostly employed in Research and Development division, in production and in software divisions. Fresher’s usually start with Rs. 20,000-30,000 per month.
As for me, I plan to go for further studies to Germany. I have started learning German language from GOETHE Institute and I am preparing for the entrance exam. I see a positive future for myself in this sector.
