Apple iPod Touch: Now with camera

File Under: Android, Apple, BlackBerry, Ford, GM, Google, iPad, iPhone, iPod, mobile, Motorola, RIM, smartphone, tablet

Consider it TMZ for tech geeks. Big manufacturers like Apple and Google like to keep their cards close to the vest, but information still leaks out. Next generation iPhones get left in bars, unnamed sources drop hints to journalists, and enterprising curiosity-seekers dig information out of patent filings and poorly hidden pre-launch marketing materials.

We've heard some good rumors floating around this spring in the ever-expanding mobile space. Here's a look at what's being whispered, wondered, and written.

For the masses that don't want to deal with AT&T, the iPod Touch has provided a very iPhone-like experience -- minus the GPS, compass and camera. At least one of those omissions might be remedied soon, with hints that Apple will reveal a new iPod Touch with a built-in camera. 9To5Mac posted the details from an eBay auction of a prototype iPod Touch with camera. The auctions were quickly pulled, but the pics remain online for all to see. That translates into a whole lot of camera-focused expectation for the next iPod Touch model announcement, possibly as early as this spring.

BlackBerry: In tablet form
Source: Boy Genius Report
Boy Genius Report cites the usual multiple mystery sources in saying that the BlackBerry tablet will feature an 8.9-inch screen and will serve as a companion device that will work alongside a regular BlackBerry and through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Other rumors say the BlackBerry tablet will be consumer-focused with an emphasis on multimedia. That tidbit might make business owners think twice. The launch date is allegedly set for December, so we could have a long wait before finding out if this a real product or a unicorn.

Motorola phone: With a twist
Source: Wired
So much for rectangular-shaped cell phones. The rumors of a new Android-powered, square-shaped Motorola phone are a little more substantial than a lot of the tech gossip that has been flying around. Original rumors called the phone the "Twist," but the latest reports include a rename to the "Flipout." The keyboard twists out and plenty of pictures are available to lust after, following the original photo leak on DroidDog in early April. Expect an actual debut sometime around June.

Apple iPad: Printing upgrade
Source: MacRumors
It took a while -- and a whole lot of business-friendly features and apps -- for the iPhone to be embraced by the business community. The iPad faces a similar climb up to business acceptance. One feature that will move it toward that goal is printing. Yes, just simple direct network printing. According to MacRumors, a customer wrote to Steve Jobs asking for exactly that feature and received a short, sweet reply saying, "It will come." That doesn't give us a lot to go on in terms of time frame, but look for the improvement to potentially arrive with the next round of iPad updates.

GM and Google: In-car tech suite
Source: MotorTrend
Ford and Microsoft have happily been leading the in-car tech evolution with the Microsoft Sync system that you see all over Ford's ads. Rumors say GM is getting hot and heavy wooing Google for a new in-car system that would use Android to help hook smartphones up with GM's vehicles. Since the gossip says this is only in the early negotiation phase, don't hold off on buying that new car. It could be quite a while before anything comes of this. Source
