Dalai Lama: China aims to annihilate Buddhism

The Dalai Lama lashed out at China on Wednesday, accusing it of trying to "annihilate Buddhism" in Tibet and rebuffing all his efforts to reach a compromise over the disputed Himalayan region.

China shot back, accusing the Tibetan spiritual leader of using deceptions and lies to distort its policy in the region. The passionate back-and-forth highlighted the distrust, anger and frustration that separates the two sides and leaves little hope for success in recently resumed talks.

Beijing has demonized the Dalai Lama and accused him of wanting independence for Tibet, which China says is part of its territory. The Dalai Lama says he only wants some form of autonomy for Tibet within China that would allow Tibetan culture, language and religion to thrive.

  1. The Chinese government has been a tyrant to its own people as well as others for far too long now. They must be stopped. What do you expect to hear from a Tyrant.Another good reason we should never do business with China anymore!

  2. What benefit does China get from it's efforts to "annihilate Buddhism"? They should embrace it and preserve the Tibetian culture. Buddism,as I see it, is a beautiful religion. China on the other hand represses religious freedoms, The Dalai lama should be held in the same esteme as the pope is. I have no religious affiliations, but obviously there are people on this site that are scared in their ignorance.

  3. who said "It's only human arrogance that makes one believe he or she is more than they are right here, right now". That is spoken like a true Buddhist. Perhaps you should educate yourself before you assume that all religions believe the same thing(s). The pursuit of Buddhism is to discover what one truly is, and often more importantly, what one isn't.
