The Cabinet committee on infrastructure on Thursday approved a Rs 5,990 crore project that will provide high-speed e-connectivity to 1,500 educational institutions across the country.
The committee, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave the go-ahead to the National Knowledge Network (NKN), which was suggested by the National Knowledge Commission.
The NKN will be implemented by the National Informatics Centre over a period of 10 years. It will have about 25 core points of presence (PoPs) and 600 secondary PoPs. The core network is expected to be set up within two years.
The network will encourage sharing of knowledge and specialised resources and collaborative research between the institutions.
Initially, Rs 100 crore was allocated to the department of information technology, ministry of communications and IT, for establishing the NKN.
The participating institutions can connect to the network at a speed of 1 gigabyte per second (gbps). The network will provide an ultra highspeed data-network highway.
It will enable scientists, researchers and students from diverse spheres across the country to work together for advancing development in critical and emerging areas. It will also help in setting up e-libraries, virtual classrooms and very large databases.
In the initial phase, around 40 institutions have already been connected to the network and six virtual classrooms set up. Source:
